Migration from a Bird’s Eye View with Ben Van Doren

As anyone who’s seen the film Winged Migration can tell you, bird migration is one of nature’s most breathtaking phenomenons. The seasonal movements of birds span the globe, connecting people and places across oceans and hemispheres. Here in the Northwest Corner, we still witness an ever changing cycle of birds based on the season, but more and more, these avian journeys are changing, influenced by warming temperatures, changing habitats, and an increasingly urbanized world.

Please join the Cornwall Library for an exploration of bird migration by Benjamin Van Doren, a scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He will cover a range of questions about migratory birds in our changing world, including: How is climate change affecting bird migration? Does feeding birds influence their migrations? What can we do to prevent migrating birds from colliding with buildings (and houses).

Van Doren studies global bird migration across scales, from individuals to continents, and his work spans ecology, evolution, behavior and conservation. He is currently a postdoctoral associate at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology with a Ph.D. from Oxford University and Bachelors of Science from Cornell University. You can read more about his studies and work at: bvandoren.com. His family has been in Cornwall for many years.

Registration is required for this Zoom event.
