Garden 2 – The Cornwall Castle
Cornwall’s Castle, with its seven magical towers, turreted doorways, gargoyles, and griffins, is surrounded by 276 acres of rolling fields, dense woods, brooks, five waterfalls, and several ponds. It is located at the end of a narrow mile-long driveway and over the years has often been referred to as Hidden Valley Estate. It was designed as a summer retreat by architect Edward C. Dean for New York socialite Charlotte Bronson Hunnewell, whose taste in architecture favored extreme romanticism. Employing only highly skilled craftsmen, the building was completed in 1924 and is fabricated from local fieldstone and filled with decorative artifacts collected in Europe by the owner and her husband, Dr. Walton Martin.
Beautifully restored from near ruin by its current owners, this storybook Castle is set in an elegant courtyard and boasts a garden grotto, an enclosed swimming pool garden, and beautifully landscaped grounds.
Transportation from the Library to the Castle will be provided by all-day shuttle bus service. Masks are optional.
