Author Talk: James Traub – “The Cradle of Citizenship”
American journalist James Traub’s book is both a critique of our country’s failure to prepare students for citizenship—and a roadmap to a better way. In a January review in The New York Times the reviewer writes, “…it is good to have a cleareyed, unflappable observer like James Traub, the author of “The Cradle of Citizenship,” [give] an illuminating portrait of America’s current education landscape.” Traub is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, where he has worked since 1998. From 1994 to 1997, he was a staff writer for The New Yorker. He has also written for The New York Review of Books, The Atlantic Monthly, National Review, Spy, and Foreign Affairs.
Maud Abeel will add perspective to the talk by serving as interlocutor. Abeel’s career has been focused on developing and working with national, state, and local educators throughout the country on initiatives and strategies to improve high school to post secondary outcomes for youth in under-resourced communities. She worked as a Teach for America teacher in Baltimore, MD, and earned a master’s degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
