Garden 4 – Contemporary ravine garden with sculptural drama

This hillside garden perched on a steep ravine that overlooks a rushing stream was created by its former owner who wanted privacy from the road and a garden with year-round interest. Beginning six years ago and working closely with Old Farm Nursery he planted a high wall of evergreen trees along the property line and a profusion of Japanese maples and dogwoods, chosen primarily for their interesting sculptural shapes, within the property’s rocky undulating terrain. Today, his stated aim to create “The vibe of a controlled bohemia – neat but not tortured” has resulted in a garden whose strictly green palette, meandering paths, and drop-dead views offer high-level drama and sustained visual excitement.
