Books & Blooms 2017
Mary Ellen & Andrea Geisser
The gardens were planted with the intention of complementing the woodland site where the house is located and so they are a little wild and unruly throughout the growing season. Daffodils pop up in spring in the fields and uncultivated areas around the house. Drought and deer resistant perennials and ground covers hug the large stone walkway close to the house. Containers off the screened in porch are full of herbs for cooking and embellishing meals and for drying later. The sun garden at the entrance of the house is at its peak in August with a variety of textures and colors in full bloom. All are maintained and expanded with the help of friends, Tom Bechtle and Don Bachman.
The vegetable garden, carved out of a woodland area not far from the house, was added in 2012. It has raised beds that gives ample room for vegetables, berries, herbs and edible flowers. It is a magical place for everyone and a source of seasonal favorites from spring asparagus and peas to late fall’s Brussels sprouts. Neighbor Diane Ingersoll is an integral part of the yearly planning and maintenance.
