Our Cornwall Village gardens contain a formal vegetable garden surrounded by a picket fence with gravel pathways and a central birdbath. Adjacent to this, our neighbors’ lovely old barns frame our perennial garden. It is formal in design, but planted informally with roses, peonies, irises and daylilies. To create a sense of abundant profusion, self-sowing flowers such as penstemon, knautia, bachelor’s buttons and spurge are encouraged.

A second vegetable garden, placed closer to the kitchen, is also formal in design. And finally, we created a garden of trees, shrubs and perennials to connect the new vegetable garden to our house.
