Friday, June 18, 5pm – Zoom talk ~ George Schoellkopf – Hollister House Garden: 40 Years in the Making
George Schoellkopf will talk about the creation and evolution of his garden which surrounds an 18th-century house and barns in Washington, Connecticut and was purchased by him in 1978. Inspired by such famous English gardens as Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, and Hidcote, the garden he has created has evolved into a uniquely American synthesis of formal structure and naturalistic planting. Terraced down a hill, it is laid out in a series of separate sections, or “rooms”, some of which are dramatically delineated by eight-foot-high yew hedges and brick walls. Considered to be one of the most beautiful gardens in the Northeast, Hollister House is now a nonprofit organization and open to the general public.

About Our Guest
George Schoellkopf was born and grew up in Texas but was educated in the East and for many years ran a gallery in New York specializing in 18th and 19th century American antiques and folk art. Following a trip taken more than 40 years ago to visit English gardens, he came home determined to make an English garden of his own at the 18th century farmhouse he had just purchased in Washington, Connecticut. The result is Hollister House Garden. George divides his time between Washington, Connecticut and Santa Barbara, California, He has written for Town & Country, House & Garden, Elle Décor, House Beautiful, Fine Gardening and is featured in Rosemary Verey’s The American Man’s Garden, and Garden Design Master Class, edited by Carl Delatore. In addition to being President of the Holllister House Garden Board of Directors, George is a director emeritus of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Lotusland in Santa Barbara, California.
