This Cornwall Village garden contains a formal vegetable garden surrounded by a picket fence with gravel pathways and a central birdbath. Adjacent to this, the neighbors’ lovely old barns frame the perennial garden. It is formal in design, but planted informally with roses, peonies, irises and daylilies. To create a sense of abundant profusion, self-sowing flowers such as penstemon, knautia, bachelor’s buttons and spurge are encouraged.

A second vegetable garden, placed closer to the kitchen, is also formal in design. And finally, the owners created a garden of trees, shrubs and perennials to connect the new vegetable garden to the house.
