Author Talk: Harry Moses – “Mad As Hell, How 60 Minutes Took on the Powerful and Made Television History”

The Cornwall Library presents Harry Moses, long-time producer for 60 Minutes and author of Mad As Hell, How 60 Minutes Took on the Powerful and Made Television History, in conversation with Richard Schlesinger, former correspondent for CBS News.

At its peak, 60 Minutes was the most powerful hour on television, drawing as many as 50 million viewers each week. Today, amid upheaval at CBS News and renewed debate over press freedom, that voice faces an urgent test of its journalistic integrity.

In Mad as Hell, Harry Moses takes us deep inside the broadcast that reshaped television journalism. Working alongside Mike Wallace, Dan Rather, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley, Diane Sawyer, Scott Pelley (who has written an introduction to the book), and executive producer Don Hewitt, he reveals how a scrappy news experiment became a national institution—and how investigative journalism at its best could hold the powerful to account.

Harry Moses wrote, directed, and produced nearly 100 stories for 60 Minutes. He has received Emmy, Peabody, and Directors Guild of America awards, as well as a Lifetime Achievement citation from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his work on 60 Minutes. He has also made documentary films, television programs, and features including The Trial of Bernhard Goetz, Assault at West Point, and Who the %$#! Is Jackson Pollock?.

Richard Schlesinger was Washington bureau chief for the Post-Newsweek television stations before joining CBS News and later becoming a correspondent for 48 Hours.  He won two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards and is the recipient of 10 Emmy Awards.
