Author Talk: Mikhail Zygar – “War and Punishment: Putin, Zelensky, and the Path to Russia’s Invasion”

In his latest book War and Punishment: Putin, Zelensky, and the Path to Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine, Mikhail Zygar mixes history, narrative, journalism, and memoir. His colleague and friend, the Nobel Prize winning editor Dmitri Muratov, claims that Zygar invented a whole new genre. Before becoming a best selling author, Zygar was a war correspondent in Iraq, Lebanon and Darfur and founded an innovative media company TV Rain, which became a thorn in the Kremlin’s side and continues to broadcast from exile. When the Russian government outlawed critical journalism at the start of the Ukraine war, Zygar left the country, eventually settling in New York as the inaugural Press Freedom Fellow at the Newmark Journalism School at CUNY.

Author, journalist, and press freedom advocate Joel Simon founded the Journalism Protection Initiative at the Newmark J-School, and supported Zygar’s work for many years during his tenure as head of the Committee to Protect Journalists. He will be in conversation with Zygar about his life and work, the future of the war in Ukraine, and his insights into American democracy and the role of the press.
