Nature Book Group Meeting and Discussion
The Library’s new Nature Group at the Library chose The Serviceberry, Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World as the next read. The author, Robin Wall Kimmerer is an indigenous scientist and as she harvests Serviceberries with the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity, the heart of the indigenous gift economy and how it informs values. The Serviceberry “distributes its wealth, its abundance of sweet, juicy berries, to meet the needs of the natural community. And this ensures its own survival.” It can serve as a model, one based on reciprocity rather than accommodation, where wealth and security come from the quality of our relations, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency. Katie Freygang and Anne Zinsser will lead the discussion. All are welcome. There are several copies of the book available to borrow.
