Opening Reception: “Painting Outdoors: Cornwall and Brittany” – Paintings by Henry Finkelstein

The Cornwall Library is pleased to present Painting Outdoors: Cornwall and Brittany, an exhibition of paintings by artist and Cornwall resident Henry Finkelstein.

Dividing his time between Cornwall and France, Finkelstein draws inspiration from the landscapes of both places. This exhibition brings together paintings created en plein air in
Cornwall over the past year, alongside works inspired by the countryside of Brittany, France.

Through his expressive use of color and light, Finkelstein captures more than the physical landscape, exploring the atmosphere and feeling of a place. Together, these works offer
visitors an opportunity to see familiar Cornwall landscapes through an artist’s eyes, while discovering the beauty of the French countryside that has long inspired his work.

Exhibit Opens:
November 14, 2026 and will be celebrated with reception from 5:00 -7:00 pm. Artwork will be available to view at the Cornwall Library until January 10, 2027.

About the Artist: Henry Finkelstein
Henry Finkelstein is an American painter known for his expressive landscapes and his exploration of color, light, and emotion. He studied at Cooper Union under Nicolas Marsicano and Reuben Kadish before earning his MFA from the Yale School of Art, where he studied with Lester Johnson. In 1983, he was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to study and paint in Italy, where he had the opportunity to immerse himself in the work of the Italian masters and explore their influence on his own artistic practice.

Finkelstein has taught painting and drawing at numerous institutions, including the Hartford Art School, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League of New York. His
artistic development has also been deeply influenced by his time in France. Awarded a residency grant in Brittany in 1992, he returned for a second residency in 2001 and has
continued to spend summers painting in the French countryside. His work reflects a lifelong fascination with the relationship between landscape, color, and the emotional experience of
place.

Registration is requested for the opening reception.
