“The Air Made Visible” – A film about the life and art of Tim Prentice – Live & Zoom

Produced by: The American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF). Directed by: A’Dora Phillips & Brian Schumacher. Run time: 42 minutes

Now in his nineties, the kinetic sculptor Tim Prentice looks back on his career and the influences that shaped him, including his fascination with the wind; the artists Alexander Calder and George Rickey; his time at Yale studying with Joseph Albers; his father, who was an architect of note and aspiring craftsperson; and his loss of vision to macular degeneration. In the film, he talks about how these influences and his own preconceptions crowd around him when he’s in his studio, and his attempt to be alone as he strives to create an “ideal” work that, like nature, expresses at once both chaos and order. The film was shot at his home and studio in Litchfield County, Connecticut and contains footage from many of the large, commissioned public works he has done over the decades.
