An author’s garden, set deep in the woods, answers the question of how to create a garden in the midst of wilderness. The challenging topography includes a glacial erratic, a plunging ravine, and an intermittent stream, as well as a stunning view of Cream Hill Lake. Natives, ferns, and deer-proof plants are part of the planting scheme as well as cherished hostas and lilies. The landscape presents a delightful contrast between a decorous, pastel-colored “Sissinghurst” on level ground beside the house and the more unruly technicolor of “Margaritaville,” in the steep ravine.
